Mr. Rodney T. Childers, I
Mr. Childers hails from San Antonio, TX where he graduated from Sam Houston High School in 2001. While at Sam Houston, Childers was involved in the Pride of the Eastside “Cherokee Marching Band”, the Symphonic Band, Jazz Band, Varsity Choir, Varisty Soccer, Varsity Tennis and the Drama Club. He auditioned and advanced in the San Antonio Independent School District, All Region and All Area Honor Bands and Choirs in 2000 and 2001.
Upon completion of his high school matriculation; Mr. Childers embarked on a journey in to the United States Navy. He served the country as an Operation Specialist onboard the USS Elrod FFG-55 until 2004. In 2004 he returned to San Antonio to enjoy his family and love of music volunteering as a musical tutor at his Alma Mater Sam Houston.
In January 2007 Rodney moved to Austin, TX and enrolled in Huston-Tillotson University majoring in Music Education (instrumental/vocal). While at HTU he had the privalage to study under great vocalist and instrumentalists Dr. Gloria Quinlan, Dr. Martin McCain and Dr. Stephan Burnaman. It was at HTU in 2009 that Childers had the opportunity to be apart of the chorus line in the production of Duke Ellington’s jazz opera, “Queenie Pie”, and work with greats Carmen Bradford Jeff Helmer and Gary Powell. Childers Graduated from Huston-Tillotson Univ. in May of 2012. He immidiately began his career as an educator, teaching preschool and special education for the first two years. It wasn’t until 2015 that Childers became a Band Director as he was hired by Hearne ISD to be thier District Director of Bands. He has served in a Head Director position for two other schools after Hearne ISD, Houston ISD’s Worthing HS and currently in his 2nd year as Director of Bands and Choirs for McDade ISD.
Childers is an active member of the Texas Music Educators Association, Associtation of Texas Small School Bands, and Texas Bandmasters Association. Also, he is a proud Spring 2009 Delta Chapter initiate of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. He is Married to his Wife Mykeshia of 5 years and they have three wonderful children.
